Context
This was initiated by the previous Careers lead. We have used aspects of the program with a range of students to support with our careers education. This included a pilot study with students (20 year 9) and using the resources to for our Year 10 work experience (250 year 10).
Overall impact
I used the session resources for year 9 and the range was very good. The activities have been planned and just need a little editing to ensure you cater for all learners. The extra resources have really supported our year 10 work experience, we have been really pleased with this aspect.
Keep it simple
During the year 9 sessions we concentrated on the skill of listening, using the resources supplied. For year 10 we have used the skills as a basis for work experience. We introduced the skills in an Assembly and then used the same skills with a booklet for the students. We will also follow up the skills with a work experience review assembly.
Start early, keep going
Year 9 group was selected and included a range of abilities and needs. Parents were informed about the sessions. The year 10 work experience resource have been a good way to introduce the skills to a wider group and this will include local employers.
Measure it
Using the resources to assess the year 9 group helped. Also, as the group was small, it was easy to provide mini opportunities for formative assessments. Low stakes but this helped to place the skills in a wider context.
Focus tightly
For year 9 I asked the students after each session to pick a subject they would use to practice the skills and we reviewed this at the start of the next session. The year 10 have a booklet to complete during their work experience and this has the skills at its core.
Keep practising
Year 10 work experience is a great place for the students to practice the skills. They will have a lot of opportunities to use their skills.
Bring it to life
Year 10 work experience.
