Active Row is London Youth Rowing’s flagship school rowing programme, currently working in over 110 state secondary schools. Active Row helps young people improve physical activity levels, boost wellbeing and build key life skills.
Active Row runs in schools with a high percentage of pupil premium students and aims to engage young people to try rowing for the first time. Using sport as a vector, London Youth Rowing (LYR) teach the essential skills through everyday sport sessions, intensive workshops and an online platform. All of these contribute to showing the young people how these skills are transferable to the workplace.
LYR also educate engaged teachers to help build a sustainable long-term delivery of the sport and essential skills.
LYR uses the Skills Builder framework to structure the development of Life Skills, adopting 5 of the key essential skills: Aiming High, Staying Positive, Teamwork, Problem Solving & Leadership.
The young people focus on developing a key life skill each school half-term by embedding the skill into session plans and activities. In addition, pupils at schools on the Active Row programme can take part in termly skills development and employability workshops run with LYR's corporate partners, opening up the possibility of different careers and using practical methods to show the transferability of the Life Skills. Students also have access to an online platform with content relating to careers and how to further develop their essential skills in these key areas.
