The Heritage and Essential Skills course includes activities to develop research, photography and archiving skills and to practise and build Essential Skills. It provides opportunities for young people to learn about and engage with the historic environment in their local area and beyond - and includes options for both indoor and outdoor learning.

The 12 sessions take around 1 hour to complete and can be carried out independently using a phone, tablet or laptop. Course materials need to be downloaded and saved onto a device and they include links to websites and YouTube videos.

Young people must be at least 13 years old to take part and have an email account to register with Historic England and Skills Builder Benchmark.

Young people are invited to use Skills Builder Benchmark to assess their Listening, Speaking, Creativity and Problem Solving skills and have opportunities to practise and build them throughout the course. They are also invited to repeat Benchmark at the end of the course to assess how much their skills have developed.
