The STEPS programme provides eight weeks of employability skills training and three months of mentoring to 40 unemployed residents of East London (18-30 year olds). Through STEPS, participants with barriers to employment receive essential career-building support through workshops designed to improve their employability skills. The in-person sessions include effective communication techniques, CV reviews, mock interviews and LinkedIn profile improvements.
By taking part in these interactive sessions, participants are able to practise the essential skills required for work in alignment with the Universal Framework, with a focus on Speaking, Aiming High and Problem Solving. The essential skills icons are included on the presentation slides for each interactive session. At the beginning of the programme, participants are introduced to the Skills Builder Universal Framework, reflect on the three essential skills using the Benchmark platform and discuss the positive benefits of utilising this tool, and reflect on essential skills throughout the programme. The assessment is repeated at the end of the programme to quantify the progress made.
