Unlocking the Potential of Global NGOs: The Power of Essential Skills

Navigating the Global Skills Landscape

In today's interconnected world, NGOs face a pressing challenge: how to effectively equip individuals with the essential skills they need to thrive. Defining, measuring and effectively teaching these skills can be a daunting task. To create meaningful impact, NGOs need a common standard for teaching and measuring these essential skills.

Introducing the Skills Builder Universal Framework

The Skills Builder Universal Framework offers a solution to this challenge. This tool provides a clear, consistent definition of essential skills and breaks them down into teachable steps. By adopting this framework, NGOs can ensure that their programs effectively equip individuals with the skills they need to succeed.

The Global Impact Fellowship: Empowering NGOs Worldwide

The Global Impact Fellowship presents an exciting opportunity for NGOs based outside the UK to leverage the Skills Builder Universal Framework. This funded fellowship provides comprehensive training and support, enabling NGOs to:

  • Learn and apply the Universal Framework to their specific contexts
  • Equip beneficiaries with essential skills for success
  • Measure and demonstrate their impact in building these skills
  • Earn an accreditation of an Impact Level to validate their achievements

A Success Story: The Egoli ‘You Can You Will’ Youth Sport Programme

A group of children participate in the Egoli Youth Sport programme. They're playing a team-building game, racing to see who will win. The children are in teams of seven all stood in a row. They have to pass a ball backwards through their legs until it reaches the end, then the team member at the back moves to the front. The team that wins is the one that cycles through the entire team first.

The Career Mill has developed the Egoli Youth Sport Programme, a community-based initiative focused on transforming the lives of young people residing in the Egoli Informal Settlement, one of Cape Town's 204 recognized informal settlements. These communities often grapple with social injustices and a range of challenges.

The Career Mill, a social impact organisation in partnership with local NGOs, aims to address these issues by providing educational and developmental opportunities for youth in Egoli. The goal is to empower these young individuals, many of whom come from marginalised backgrounds, to escape cycles of poverty and violence.

Egoli Informal Settlement was established by displaced farm workers approximately 16 years ago. Today, it's home to over 3,000 people, including 111 youth participating in the sport programme. The Career Mill is actively collaborating with organisations and foundations to provide platforms for learning, development, and skill-building.

Many of the youth are at risk of falling into destructive behaviours like alcohol and substance abuse or gang violence. Through the Egoli Youth Sport Programme, they are offered a supportive environment where they can develop essential skills, gain employment training, and participate in sports activities.

By participating in the fellowship The Career Mill was able to:

  • Embed the Universal Framework into their existing program
  • Identify and address specific skill gaps among participants
  • Achieve an Impact Level 2 accreditation demonstrating their effectiveness in building essential skills

Enid, Founder of The Career Mill and the program coordinator at Egoli Youth Sport, shared her experience:

"The Global Impact Fellowship provided us with the necessary content and tools to equip our youth with essential skills, enabling them to overcome adversity and create positive change in their lives."
